Welcome to the Learn to Skate Program
at The Rink at Warwick!

Welcome to The Rink at Warwick Learn to Skate Program. We are proud to serve the Warminster/Warwick Areas providing the highest quality of programs at an affordable rate. Our successful program is based on the curriculum designed by the Ice Skating Institute, the national governing body for Figure Skating. Our professional staff ensures a fun, challenging, safe and rewarding experience. This progressive program meets the needs of the recreational skater while developing the fundamentals to advance to competitive figure skating and ice hockey. Our Learn to Skate program runs year round with new sessions beginning every eight weeks.

The Learn to Skate program is based upon the Ice Skating Institute's skill progression. It was created to be the best beginning ice skating program that is fun, challenging and rewarding. This progressive eight-week program serves the needs of both the recreational and the competitive skater. The following is a short description of each level.

Tot Level Skaters
The Ice Skating Institute's Tot testing program offers specialized instruction for three to five year-olds with the emphasis on fun.

 

Beginner Tot
Advanced Tot
  • Tot One Level
    Standing • Proper way to fall down • Proper way to get up • Marching in standing position.
 
  • Tot Three Level
    Preparation for beginning stroke • Preparation for snowplow stop • Teapot • One-foot snowplow stop.
  • Tot Two Level
    Marching while moving • Two-foot jump in place • Forward Swizzle standing still • Moving Swizzle.
 
  • Tot Four Level
    T-Position and push • Backward wiggle • Backward swizzle.

Beginning Levels
The Ice Skating Institute's Pre-Alpha test program introduces skaters to the wonderful world of ice skaitng. Emphasizing fun and safety, lessons quickly generate confidence as new skaters develop skills and make new friends. Beginners encompass the following levels:
  • Beginner Level
    Proper way to fall down • Proper way to get up • Marching while moving • Beginning Two-Foot Glide • Snowplow stop.
  • Advanced Beginner
    Two Foot Glide • Forward Swizzle • Backward Wiggle • Right "U" Turn • Left "U" Turn.
  • Pre-Alpha Level
    One-foot glide right foot • One-foot glide left foot • T-Position with push right foot • T-Position with push left foot • Backward Swizzle.

Basic Skills
The ISI basic skills skating programs guides new skaters through carefully graduated maneuvers, ensuring rapid progress over short time periods. Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta tests provide direction and build competency in all important foundation moves. forward and backward skating, stopping, turning and edges are taught in exciting, low cost group lessons.

 

  • Alpha Level One
    Forward Stroking • One-foot snowplow stop • Stand still crossovers - right foot over left foot • Stand still crossovers - left foot over right foot.
  • Beta Level Two
    Backward pumps on circle - right foot • Backward pumps on circle - left foot • Backward crossovers - right foot over left foot • Forward spiral on a straight line: right or left.
  • Alpha Level Two
    Forward pumps on circle right foot • Forward pumps on circle left foot • Forward crossovers - right foot over left foot • Forward crossovers - left foot over right foot.
  • Gamma Level
    Right forward outside 3 turn • Left forward outside 3 turn • Right forward inside open Mohawk combination • Left forward inside open Mohawk combination • Left foot Hockey stop • Left foot Hockey stop.
  • Beta Level One
    T-stop right foot • T-stop left foot • Backward stroking • Backward crossovers standing still right over left • Backward crossovers standing still left over right.
  • Delta Level
    Right Forward inside 3 turn • Left forward inside 3 turn • Forward outside edges • Forward inside edges • Shoot-the-Duck or Lunge.

Freestyle
The freestyle levels are designed to give skaters a strong foundation on which to build up their skills. This is the point where the skater can choose whether to pursue a recreational or competitive approach to the sport of figure skating.

 

  • Freestyle Test 1
    Forward inside pivot • Two-foot spin • Forward Arabesque • Backward Edges (outside and inside edges) • Waltz Jump • 1/2 flip
  • Freestyle Test 3
    Backward outside or inside pivot • Salchow Jump • Change foot spin • Backward Arabesque • Toe loop or toe walley jump • Dance step sequence
  • Freestyle Test 2
    Ballet Jump • Half toe walley • Half lutz • One foot spin • Two forward Arbesques • Dance step sequence
  • Freestyle Test 4
    Flip jump • Loop jump • Half loop jump • Two backward Arabesques • Backward outside and inside 3 turns (Dance step sequence)

2007-08 Fall/Winter Season Dates, Times and Fees
Each class is held for 30 minutes, one a week for eight weeks. On the first day of classes, please come at least 30 minutes early on the first day to check in, receive your class assignment and get the correct rental skates.

Tuesdays:
5:30-6:30 PM

Saturdays:
2:15-3:45 PM

Sundays:
2:15-3:45 PM

Tot Lessons Held Only:
Tuesdays: 1:15-2:15PM
Thursdays: 10:00-11:00AM

Program Benefits

All registered members of the Basic Skills Program will receive the following:

  • Rental Skates Included!
  • 10 Student maximum per class
  • Progress report at the end of each session
  • All Skaters receive a participant certificate

    Eight (8) FREE Public Skating Sessions
What Do I Wear?

Our coaching staff has recommended that the students should come to all classes with the following:

  • Warm Jacket, pants and hat
  • One pair of knit gloves (REQUIRED)
  • Helmet for beginners (REQUIRED for all skaters 6 & younger, loaner helmets are available at rink)
  • Certified ice hockey helmet is REQUIRED for Hockey LTS only

Homeschool and Preschool Learn to Skate
group lesson sessions available!

Special weekday, day time home school and preschool sessions can be arranged with 4 or more skaters by emailing or calling our Skating Director, Cathy Adamoyurka. The Rink office number is 215-441-5004.


Competitions and Shows
The Rink at Warwick offers all participants of the Learn to Skate program the opportunity to perform in both shows and competitions. Shows and competitions are a great tool to motivate, set goals and give a skater a sense of accomplishment while learning good sportsmanship and team work. Skaters of all ages, levels and ability get the opportunity to participate. Competitions and shows occur throughout the year so there is always something to work towards.
